So it's not like I over worked it or abused it. I bought this sander over a year ago. I'd say I used it no more than 6 times when when I started to notice a burning smell. I used it on occasion for a few projects. Not even every month. It also was sounding louder than normal. Turns out the sanding piece that spins (sorry don't know the proper names)was coming loose from the main unit.
I think the use of a plastic base here really limits the lifespan of this sander.I would recommend someone buy a DIFFERENT sander that will probably last longer. Specifically, the sanding base that moves had sheared itself off from the main unit.
I typically spend more money for the higher end tools or better brand / quality reputation. This sander worked great for me for about 6 months. I've bought a lot of tools over the years.
It should have a round dust port. However, last night after approximately six months use -- medium use, I'm a 'weekend hobby' woodworker -- the thing died. It did its job, and did it well.
The dust port never worked as good as a Bosch palm sander I had and you can't attach a vacuum to it easily either, though. The screws worked themselves through the PLASTIC base.
I know I'll end up spending more money to get this thing working -- if I don't just get a different brand/model all together.
black and decker sander almost cause physical damage as the bottom plastic plate self destruct.
We're averaging 1 backup pad with regular use averaging about 4 hrs off and on each day.I naturally went back to where I bought it thinking I could easily just by another back up pad. I went to my local home improvement store and found the Firestorm sander by Black and Decker. My husband and I recently bought a house and we decided to sand down the kitchen cabinets before painting them. They didn't carry them though -. It was a good price and I liked the jug handle. The amps seemed comparable to other models there and so I bought it.Two weeks later into our cabinet sanding - we just burnt out our 2nd backup pad. I searched the internet - nothing - except for the Dewalt Service Center (part of Black and Decker). Our conclusion - only buy if you need this for tiny projects and you only plan on sanding 15-30 mins tops. We're going to return it tomorrow - and get a different brand because going through a backup pad per week to us seems ridiculous.
Perfect for small jobs. Has 3 gripping choices which makes it easier to use at any angle. The carrying case doesn't have a place to put your sanding disks, but that's a minor inconvience.
